19:30 Speech by Carl Bäckstrand, architect and one of the main managers of the internationally successful Swedish studio White Arkitekter
Carl Bäckstrand is senior architect, partner and deputy CEO of White Arkitekter, a Scandinavian pioneer and thought-leaderin sustainable architecture. White is most recognised for visionary examples of sustainable architecture facing the challenges with Climate change, rapid urbanisation and social injustices, such as affordable housing and placemaking in Barking London, tall timber constructions for Sara Cultural Centre In Skellefteå and a 100-year Masterplan for the relocation of the City of Kiruna in Sweden’s Arctic north. Carl is since many years focusing on urban issues with a Master degree in Architecture at Lund University followed by studies in Landscape architecture at Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen and then Urban Design as a Visiting Scholar at MIT Cambridge MA. The sustainability challenges in all three aspects; Environmental, Economic and Social are fundamental and White has been successful in implementing the mindset in not only the practice itself but most importantly in the projects, recently shown in competitions for circular architecture in Berlin and the C40 competition in Montreal. As a Co-Chair in NYC based van Alen International Council and Board member of ARQ foundation funding research in architecture Carl contributes to bringing the business closer to science and building new strategic partnerships. On policy level Carl engage in international collaborations as a Board member in Architects Council of Europe. A keynote speaker at internationally renowned conferences such as Greenbuild and at universities such as Stuttgart School of Architecture, Carl is sought after for his cutting-edge expertise combining academic and practice-based architectural research.
